3’5″ x 5’7″ East Anatolian Kurdish Rug, 19th century

The origin of design in rugs is fascinating.  The most distinctive feature of this tribal weaving is the Bellini “re entrant” prayer rug format first documented in rugs portrayed in the paintings of Italian Renaissance which date to the early 16th century. Most early extant examples of this design type are attributed to a Western Anatolian  (Oushak) production. In our example the design has migrated east, and changed into a different (some would say primitive) interpretation.  A very unusual rug. Worn. 19th century age.
